Can You Mount a TV on Metal Studs?
Yes — but it's not the same as wood. Metal studs are standard in apartments, condos, high-rises, and commercial buildings across Raleigh and the Triangle. Most TV mounting guides are written for wood-framed homes. Here's what's actually different with metal — and how we handle it.
Yes. Metal studs require toggle bolts instead of wood screws. When installed correctly with the right hardware, a metal stud TV mount is completely safe and holds any residential TV size.
Metal vs Wood Studs — What's the Difference?
Wood studs are solid — you drive a screw directly into them and it grips. Metal studs are hollow C-shaped channels, typically 25-gauge or 20-gauge steel. A standard wood screw in a metal stud will strip immediately under load. You need hardware designed for the hollow wall behind the drywall.
| Feature | Wood Studs | Metal Studs |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Solid lumber | Hollow steel channel |
| Common in | Single-family homes | Apartments, condos, high-rises, commercial |
| Hardware needed | Lag bolts / wood screws | Toggle bolts / snap toggles |
| Difficulty | Standard | Requires correct technique |
| Weight capacity | Very high | High — with proper anchors |
| Install time | Standard | Slightly longer |
How Do You Know If You Have Metal Studs?
Stud finder behavior: On wood studs, a stud finder beeps at the edges of the stud — a defined narrow area. On metal studs, it beeps continuously across the entire width of the channel, sometimes 3-4 inches wide.
Sound test: Tap the wall with your knuckle. Over a metal stud, there's a slightly more resonant, metallic ring compared to the duller thud of wood.
Building type: If you're in an apartment building, condo, high-rise, or any building built after 2000 with multiple floors — metal studs are almost certain. In Raleigh, this includes most downtown apartments, North Hills condos, Brier Creek apartment communities, and any newer multi-family construction.
Magnet test: A strong magnet held to the wall will stick noticeably stronger over a metal stud than over the gap between studs.
What Hardware Do We Use for Metal Studs?
Toggle bolts (butterfly anchors) are the primary solution. They pass through the drywall and the hollow metal stud, then expand behind the wall. The load is distributed across the drywall and stud flange — not just the thin metal wall of the stud.
Snap toggles (TOGGLER brand) are a cleaner alternative — a plastic channel stays in the wall permanently and a machine bolt threads into it. These are easier to work with and very reliable.
For large TVs (75" and up), we use multiple anchor points across two studs, which dramatically increases the load capacity and eliminates any flex or movement in the mount.
Metal Studs in Your Apartment?
We handle metal stud installs across Raleigh, Apex, Cary and the Triangle. Same price as standard installs.
How Much Weight Can Metal Studs Hold?
This is where most people get nervous — and where most internet guides get it wrong by being overly conservative. A properly installed toggle bolt in 1/2" drywall over a metal stud can hold 50-100 lbs per anchor point. A TV mount uses 4-6 anchor points minimum.
A 65" TV typically weighs 55-70 lbs. An 85" TV weighs 80-130 lbs. With 4-6 properly installed toggle anchors, the combined capacity is well above any residential TV size. We've mounted 85" and 98" TVs on metal stud walls without any issues.
The key is using the right size toggle for the drywall thickness and TV weight — and not relying on a single anchor point.
Where We See Metal Studs in the Triangle
Downtown Raleigh apartments — virtually all modern apartment buildings use steel framing throughout.
North Hills condos — newer mid-rise construction, metal studs standard.
Morrisville and Brier Creek apartment communities — heavily concentrated near RTP, mostly metal frame construction.
Commercial offices — always metal studs in office and retail buildouts.
Luxury high-rises — concrete core with metal stud interior walls, sometimes concrete exterior walls requiring masonry anchors.
What Does Metal Stud TV Mounting Cost?
At Art of Mount, there's no separate surcharge for metal studs. Standard TV mounting pricing applies — starting from $145 for TVs up to 65" and $165-$179 for larger TVs. The correct toggle hardware is included.
The install takes 15-20 minutes longer than a wood stud install due to the different drilling and anchor-setting technique, but the price doesn't change.
