85" LG OLED TV mounted on a natural granite fireplace surround — endoscope-assisted stud verification and precision stone drilling in a luxury Raleigh home.
This Raleigh home featured a custom fireplace wall finished with natural black granite panels approximately 1.5 inches thick — a premium material that creates a striking visual centerpiece in the living room. The homeowner wanted an 85" LG OLED TV mounted above it, integrated cleanly into the architecture of the space.
The result needed to look intentional: a large-format display that belongs in the room, not an afterthought bolted to an expensive surface. That kind of outcome requires getting every technical decision right before a single hole is drilled.
No framing documentation. The homeowner did not have records showing the exact location of structural framing behind the stone surface. With 1.5" of solid granite covering the wall, there was no way to use a standard stud finder — and drilling into unsupported backing would not hold the weight of an 85" display.
Irreplaceable stone. Each granite panel represented a significant investment. Improper drilling — wrong speed, wrong pressure, insufficient heat management — risks chipping, cracking, or thermal fracture of the stone. There is no margin for error on a surface like this.
Weight and structural load. An 85" LG OLED is a heavy panel. The mounting system had to connect directly to structural framing, not just the wall surface behind the stone. That means verifying framing location precisely before committing to any drill position.
Before touching the wall, we performed a structural investigation using an inspection camera (endoscope). This allowed us to visualize what was behind the granite surface and calculate actual stud positions with confidence — no guesswork, no test holes in irreplaceable stone.
Once framing was confirmed, we drilled through the granite using specialized masonry bits with controlled speed and active heat management. Granite is hard and brittle; the process requires steady, deliberate technique — not force. Each hole was completed cleanly, with no chipping or surface damage to the surrounding stone.
The mounting system was secured directly into the structural framing behind the granite, distributing the load correctly and providing a stable, permanent anchor for the display.
The 85" LG OLED is precisely centered on the granite surround, perfectly level, and positioned at the correct viewing height relative to the seating area. The mount sits flush against the stone. The installation hardware is not visible. The granite surface is intact — no marks, no chips, no evidence that anything difficult happened here.
The finished installation complements the clean architectural lines of this luxury Raleigh home. The TV and the fireplace now read as a single designed element, rather than a television placed in front of a fireplace.
